My mother. She helps more people directly than any of those mentioned. I'm sure there are others like her whose caring, concern, and help go unnoticed each day. Women who work in hospices. You don't know their names, they are not in it for attention.

Yeah, Condoleeza Rice. She has a doctorate and is one of the most powerful women in the world. A far better role model than any actress or singer. What she has done to improve the world probably depends on your political point of view, but as far as a role model, her drive and success would be great for any young woman to try to emulate.

Arundhati Roy--author and activist for human rights
Amy Goodman--host of the radio program Democracy Now!
Vandana Shiva--scientist, water rights activist, and author
Wangari Muta Maathai--environmental activist and 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner
Then there are so many women the Civil Rights Movement (Ella Baker and Diane Nash to name a couple) who need to be thought of as role models. Then there is Emma Goldman who was a feminist and free speech activist during the late 19th and early 20th century.

Unfortunately, only actresses and singers get the best publicity, in order to be considered role models. But still there are some women who deserve our attention, like Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, who succeeded in a world controlled by male politicians. And let`s not forget about Oprah! She became so famous (and rich) by being a witty Afro American lady, who didn`t care she had weight problems and whose opinion is highly respected today. I bet there are many other female scientists who deserve all the credits, but, if we continue to watch MTV and read only tabloids, we will never discover them.
