just wondering. some animals that some vegetarians choose not to eat , eat and survive off of some of the plants vegetarians do eat. i'll use this example. the classic cartoon "tom and jerry" the cat chases the mouse that feeds off of the cheese. but what if tom decided he was no longer going to eat mice, now he only ate dairy, specifically cheese which is also what the mouse eats. so now(ignore the fact that jerry is smarter than tom, lol) the mouse dies because the cat eats up all the cheese. do you see my point? i'm not some vegetarian hater, I just don't understand and would like some insight on why some vegetarians choose to only eat plant based foods when plants are just as alive as animals.

Good. Very good. I like questions like this.
Well when you eat the fruit of the plant, you are not killing
anything. It is going to fall to the ground and perish. THere
is no flesh and blood in it. It is a fruit for you to eat. Remember
Adam and Eve ate the apple not the serpent?

I'm not vegetarian, but I know people who are and have thought about the idea. There are two reasons why people go veggie. One is the animal rights activist reason, because eating only plants saves the animals. You're right in that plants are just as alive. Since we can connect with animals and see their pain, we feel worse for them than plants, and thus people don't mind killing plants for the sake of animals.
The other reason why people go vegetarian is that it is a much, much more environmentally conscious way of living. Herds of cattle alter the land in profound ways, often harming it and perhaps leading to desertification. The area of land altered to get an amount of food out of cattle is vastly larger than the area of land altered to get the same amount of food out of plants. Vegetarianism skips the extra level of the cattle herds. Thus, vegetarianism is more environmentally sound.
Edit: From reading some of the other answers I started to wonder, are the so-called fruititarians also for embryonic stem-cell research? Because eating the fruit kills the plant embryo. At what point does a seed become a plant??!! What say you, crazy s?

The plants that veggies eat are grown specifically for that purpose. So, to go with your example, it would be the same as Tom would stop eating mice and make his own cheese. If there was no agriculture, you might have a point, but since we grow plants so that they can be eaten, we aren't taking food out of an animals mouth. If anything, corn and other grains are grown as animal feed.
Also, plant matter is much easier to digest and, in most instances, healthier than animal matter.

Many vegetarians replace all meats with plants because we can see/relate to the suffering of the animals so much more than the pain a plant might feel. Animals are much more obviously relatable to us whan you consider all of the paralells/similarity. (ex: same 5 senses, has babies, similar 2 eyes staring back at you. )That is very different from a plant.
Some vegetarians called Fruitarians do not eat produce that has to hurt the plant. They eat what the plant offers as food and this includes fruits, beans, suagh, eggplant, zucchini, cucumber, nuts, tomatoes, etc.
So there are varying degrees of conscious/peaceful eating for vegetarians.

Well, consider this, if you eat plants, you probably are not killing the whole plant, just consumming part of it, which will regenerate anyway, so technically you are not killing anything. The same goes for fruits. On the other hand, animals can't realy regenerate.
The only problem to this explaination would be roots, like carrots and potatoes, but then, is the root the whole plant, or just part of it?

I am no t a full vegetarian, but I dont eat much meat. I dont do it for the same reasons that vegetarians do though. I just dont like the way meat taste. It has nothing to do with the fact that the animal was "alive".

That's an excellent question considering fruitarians call vegetarians cannibals of some sort for hurting vegetables they cook. Someone mentionned the carrot that screams and that's the idea for fruitarians who still go on and eat vegetables and fruits.
Now i could be terribly biased but it seems to me that! and as you rightly pointed out, vegetals do have a life and thus to eat them is also to take a life!
Personally i love animals but i still eat meat/fish/vegetables/fruits.
And really ... What others eat/don't eat is their business but you made a good point. After all God made the earth, plants, etc ... Same as he made us so! In for a penny in a for a £!!! If i'm going to go to hell because i like steak (Shared with my dogs) then fair enough but i'll keep having my steak with vegetables and mushrooms that too have a life (Til they end up in my frying pan of course)

plants dont feel pain, animals do feel pain.
and we use more plants to feed a cow then we would use to just eat the plants. so there would be less plant usage if we were all vegetarians so more animals could eat. Jerry wouldn't starve to death.
id would love to talk to you about this more my yahoo ID is thomaslalonde2000

We got to eat something. I like everything. But a plant doesn't have blood. And that is one of the most reason why vegetarians don't eat meat is the blood ...Life is in the blood.
I like vegetable better but hey i would not turn down a good rib Eye Steak. :D
