I'm not sure how close of friends you are, but a lot of my friends make special mix cds for their friends for their birthdays...whether it's just music that they think their friend would like or maybe songs that have special meaning or memories to them. I also have made scrapbooks for friends with pictures of us and other memorable things -- but again, I'm not sure how close of friends you are or how much time you have to spend on the gift.
Everyone seems to like different things for their birthday -- maybe you could call and ask his mom what he would want or if there is something that his parents wanted to get him but didn't. I've done that before, and it usually helps a lot.

everyone is differnent try to find something personal that they can use frequently, my best were a wallet and neck chain.
