I don't think that girls need to wear makeup at all... They should just wear the face they were given...

if its just lip gloss i dont see the big deal...my mom started me with one thing at a time, if i wanted to wear make up she would say ok but only lip gloss, and that was good til middle school, then she would start letting me use a little eyeshadow but no liner or mascara, it wasnt until high school that i wore a full face of make up and even then I didn't always wear it. Now in college i rarely ever put on makeup. I guess just make her feel beautifl with out make up. And maybe if it is a special occasion let her where a little more...but if this is just about your sisters daughter than you really can't interfere at all.

lip gloss is ok at 8 as long as it's like tinkerbell or something with no color. the masacara is too much. At 14 she should be able to wear some lip gloss in a soft color. She should be able to wear a little eye shadow at 16 and at 17 she can wear a little foundation if needed and etc. Makeup should be given in appropriate steps. They should understand what makeup is for and when it is appropriate.

Flavored lip glosses are fine after age 8 or so, maybe some blusher starting in junior high. I wore full makeup starting at 13 or so, but I made a total hash of it! Blue eyeshadow and the works. I cringe every time I see a photo from those days.

It's up to the parents to decide. Each girl is different.

On average, a young girl can start wearing lip gloss at around 12 and maybe mascara at around 14.

I started wearing make-up when I was 14. Looking back on it I looked ridiculous. I wore the same make-up I do now at 23, black eyeliner and mascara. But at 14 I looked like I was playing dress up. I think it's cool my mom let me do that though. She always let me make my own mistakes, as long as I didn't make any really big ones. But 8? That's um, inappropriate. Like putting a shirt that says "Sexy" on a 10 year old. They're only sexy to pedophiles! What are young girls trying to do? They look like little prostiteens.

I think it is up to the child. If they are mature then they can start a little younger, however, it is important to first let the child understand that they are beautiful on thier own and do not need the make up. If they choose to wear it it is only there to enhance what they already have.

A good age for that is about 15 and up.

i have a 5 year old daughter, she started wearing eye shadows and lip gloss when she was three. when we go to church, she's made up and she uses nail polish too. i don't use make-up myself but i let her do her thing, i'm thinking it's just a phase or her way of self-expression.
