If I've been with someone for a year and a half, and plan to eventually marry, would buying a house within a year be a bad idea? We don't have a perfect relationship. We do fight. But the commitment is strong. I'm just concerned about the legalities of the whole thing if there ever is a problem. Not that I expect it. I'm just trying to be you know, adult-like and logical. I know people who got stuck with someone in a mortgage when they weren't married and it caused some serious problems. But paying rent really sucks. I could be making a house payment that is lower than rent and actually get some investment off of it. And no, I've never seen "The Break Up"

Before buying a house, whenever it is, I plan on going to homebuyers classes. That should help with some of the legal questions. I'd buy a house in my name only but my boyfriend doesn't like the idea and I don't have enough income/credit to get anything more than 60,000 for a house. Which would buy a one bedroom shack pretty much.

There are a few concerns here, like you mentioned, what happens when you break up. Legally, those are hard questions to answer. If I were you, I would either get the loan myself, or have the other person do it. That way, if someone breaks it off, the person with the loan stays, and the other one leaves. After you are married, you can get the loan put in both of your names.

Paying rent might really suck, but paying on a mortgage should you ever split up, is even worse. You might want to ask an attorney for their advice before you decide to buy a house together. They can tell you all the things you must do legally, so that, in the event that you two split up before the marriage, you won't be left "out in the cold".

I've been in a LTR for 11 years now. She has no intentions of marrying me I asked her twice, one or both of us would lose our disability incomes. Perhaps she did me a favor by saying NO! Only time will tell Her 18 yr. old son is a troublemaker and now is in the proper place,Jail. . We have our ups and downs. Someday I'd love to buy a home I could call my own., but I would be most guarded of whom I would choose to help me in this endeavour.

First of all, nobody has a perfect relatonship. Secondly, see a lawyer and see what the legal implications are. Just make sure your covered. What will happen if you split one or the other will have to buy the other person out.

If you do go in and buy a house together, make sure your name is on the deed...either just your name or both your names. That way if anything happens you will still have the equity in your house. Good Luck!

You are a very smart lady. Trust your intuition. Don't get a house. Continue paying rent until you are sure that the relationship will endure through the years......jsut as the house payments will.

DON'T DO IT!!! Things happen, even if there were a ring on your finger...you can still end up wanting to go your own separate ways and then get stuck with all the bills on your own. Give it more time before you make a decision like that.
