Unless there has been a divorce granted by a court of competent jurisdiction, then the individual is still married. A couple could be separated for decades but will still be legally married without a divorce decree.
Either of the parties would know if a divorce had been granted, and would have copies of the divorce decree, so all you need to do is ask for a copy of it. No decree means still married!

It should be public record in the county, state where they lived as a married couple. I would go there, to start off. If that doesn't work, go to the county where the other person lives. It all; depends on which state hosted the divorce.

You would need to see if there is a divorce decree on file in either of the states. Most courts let you search online, but superior courts go by county, so make sure you do a search in the right county.

well just being separated doesnt mean divorce. you have to be legally divorced by the state. one of the partner would need to pursue a divorce if either one intends to remarry. if it's impossible to find the other person to finalize the divorce papers, a divorce can still be pursued under "abandonment" circumstances.

Usually the county in which they were married has public on their web sites all marriage certificates as well as divorce papers, you'll also find any documentation on any reason they've gone to court or have been taken to court. Search public records!!
Have fun!

Check the state of the s'posed married couples residence circuit court website. this info is public so if you know the full name of either party and possibly birthdates check the circuit court website, it will tell you if the divorce papers were ever even filed.
