Most of the gasses that some out when you fart are odorless, such as CO2, N2 and methane (yes, methane is odorless. The stuff you smell when you turn on the stove is an additive called tetrahydrothiophene).
The smell comes from various other components which are produced by bacteria in your guts, such as hydrogen sulfide, other thiols and nitrogen containing compounds such as indole and skatole. Eating a more sulfur-rich diet therefore will result in more stinky farts.

The main component is CO2, methane is also present, as well as nitrogen - HOWEVER, all of these are odorless.
The odor comes from the sulfur compounds in the flatus., most of the odor comes from hydrogen sulfide (H2S), some sulfur dioxide is present as well. Depending upon what you ate, you can have a small amount of mercaptans too. All of the sulfur compounds above sort of smell like, well, you know . . . .

This web site is the "all knowing" site for fart facts.
The listing shows that farts are variable in contents and in fact all farts are unique. There is a minimal amount of methane, (usually reserved for herbivores like cows and goats), and a large amount of air and nitrogen. Read on the site about why they stink, how loud they can be and how adjust your diet for best results. You might learn something if you visit the site. Good Luck!

There is actually methane in a fart, as well as some nitrogen based gases. Methane is the major component and has a distinctive smell. It is produced in larger quantities by herbivores, such as cows and pigs, than other animals.
