I know you can... but not sure exactly how. A lot of riding lawn mowers now days use the verticle shaft engines. I think the gearbox switches the output for them. Myself I would probably just find a side-shaft engine like found on some of the self propelled lawn mowers.

sure! use v belts, after mounting the motor mount a pulley on the output shaft then, mount a second pulley horizontally letting the v belt twist 90 degrees from the motor to the second pulley,some riding and push mowers use this configuration,have fun and remember building is as fun as riding

Don't bother with a vertical. They are way more trouble, and don't work very well.
