have you looked in device manager to see if the device is even installed correctly? If installed ok, have you tested the CD drive within device manager? Also have you looked at the event logs within the event viewer under the system tab?

I nkow everyone else has put about cleaning but could be hardware error. But need information from your system log after trying a CD. ok!

try a lens cleaner.. or go into device properties and make sure it is set to cd-r.... my toshiba laptop, if i use dvd's,on say, record-now.. i have to switch between the two settings.... you can right click on the dvd drive in my computer and change things there as well

try purchasing a lens cleaner . If that does solve it you will need to purchase a new drive to the problem this usually cost about £60 and £25 to have fitted

it sounds to me as its a lens problem,it may be just dirty(runa cd lens cleaner ),but only use specified solutions to avoid damage to lens
i clean both my optical drives twice yearly so they dont get too dirty,a cleaner set should last for about 5 years on 2 drives and at around £1-99 thats around 40p a year...a bargain
i dont think it is a driver problem ,because its attached permenetly to the laptop so it will continue to be recognized
it may need to be left overnight for any solution to dissolve and it should be ok
good luck

if smart says that arduous disk drive failure is probably, then i'd create backups. do not question it, even if it would nicely be a pretend alarm. smart is impressive at detecting mechanical issues with the aid of the indisputable fact that's embedded into the hdd firmware. different application would not have the ability to come back across eminent failure.

it does not need cleaning.
if you have updated drive drivers backdate .
try going to device manager and remove the drive.
reboot
this will find the drive .this might work (have tried it ,it worked )
