I signed up for taking the actuarial exam (P/1), and i wil be taking the exam next month. I am really nervous about it because I don't know exactly what I can do to prepare for it. I'm a math major and I already took a probability and stat. class and my calculus is good enough to solve stat. problems. However, I have problems in spotting the right approach in solving the type of probablity problems that I will be asking... What can I do? Anybody took this test can give me a hint??? right now, i am just reviewing probablity topic by topic using some probability books. Are there any better study guide or online resources for studying for this test?

Go to the SOA website and download the study notes for Exam 1/P as well as the course syllabus. Read one of the recommended texts--I suggest Bean (the last one). Do all the practice questions. Go to the website listed below and register for an account--there is a LOT more information as well as free weekly practice questions.

It's been a long time since I took the probability and statistics exam, but I know the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society published a booklet of sample questions and answers (updated annually, I think). You should check with the SOA or CAS to see whether that booklet, or its successor, is available.
By reviewing (and solving) the sample questions, you can get a very good idea of which topics you've mastered and which ones you need to study some more.
Good luck!

As with preparing for any exam, your best bet is to get past exams. There are many sites available that give you free downloads of past exams. Since the SOA have recently changed the format, the calculus stuff won't be helpful, but you can for sure use the probability questions. There is a site www.beanactuary.com which just loaded sample questions on the probability and financial methods tests. (They're probably a compilation of the past tests' probability questions.) There are other good resources, but with only a month left, this will be your best help.
Good luck!

By an actex study manual and work a ton of problems. You can also buy dvd's that will show you approaches and take online classes. All this can be found at the Actex website. Also go to www.actuary.com or actuary.org, they have a really good forum. I took it and felt that it really wasn't that bad. Just work really hard.
