Spend less than you make.

An interesting book at the library, I found, is called "The Millionaire Next Door". You'd be surprised who's rich and who's not.

Pay your bills. Call your creditors and ask if they are willing to either take lower payments or even possibly settle for a percentage owed. A lot may just be willing to. They figure it is better to get something than chase you for years and get nothing.
