First, you should know that I'm not bashing you in the paragraph below.
One of the most important things to understand is that tarot is not unlike reading a fortune cookie, or one of those astrological scrolls in the supermarket. The circumstances defined can apply to anyone! I could read you an astrological scroll from Virgo, Scorpio, Libra, etc. and you would possibly think that they apply to you (whatever your sign is). My point? The results are very general and are open to a myriad of interpretations. However, your beliefs and faith are yours to own. I do not judge them.
First, you should "cleanse" your deck and never let anyone else touch them. Ever. Get to know your tarot cards. Understand the meaning of each card and each suit -and the implications of drawing a given card (i.e., drawing "The Tower" card indicates a change in life -usually defined as a 'great change').
Research the differing methods and styles for drawing the cards (which you're attempting to do here). Each "spread" serves a different purpose. One could conceivably perform a 3-card spread for a very rudimentary reading. Another, as mentioned above, is the called the Celtic Cross: which is (duh) in cross formation with cards spread along the side. It is one of the more detailed readings you can make. Since it's been ages since I've delt a deck (much less owned one), I'm unable to tell you the quantities and sequence of cards that are dealt. (There is significance in the placement order and location of the cards, btw.)
In every scenario (regardless of spread style), the cards indicate the reading of the individual's present, past, and possible future. When conveying this information, it is imperitive that you remind him/her that the future is not set. It is based on their decisions today. You must also warn them not to take the cards at face value (i.e., they may totally freak out if the see "The Devil" or "Death" dealt into their spread).
Depending on the style of deck you purchase, you may receive a book which explains not only the cards, but the differing spreads, and the implications of each of your readings. It will also enable you to understand and properly interpret the meanings behind your readings.
If you do not own a deck and are a beginner, seek out a basic, no-frills deck that at least comes with the book. If it's not available, get one. They are often found in the "Occult", "Religious" or "Spirituality" sections, depending on the bookstore.
Practice. Practice. Practice.
Do not hold stock in all the you read. Do not allow the deck to rule your life's decisions. Tarot does have it's roots in gaming.
Most of all, have fun.

The most often used spread is the 5 card spread. The card placement resembles a staircase with the third card being the top, there should be two cards stepping up to and then down from this card on each side. The first card represents the current situation or problem being faced. The second card represents the events leading up to the current situation. The third card represents you or the person the reading is being done for, The fourth card represents the people who are affecting this situation, or are will have an effect on the eventual outcome. The final card represents the outcome. Correctly interpreting this card is vital, as any solutions will present themselves in this card.

Don't bother... Tarot originally started out as a game in 15th century Italy, by adding to a normal deck of cards 21 trump cards, a fool, and 4 queens of each suit.
Some early Tarot decks of North Italian origin, which date to the early to mid-15th century have remained. These were called carte da trionfi or "cards of the triumphs". Soon afterwards, the cards came to be known as Tarocchi. It is unknown when the tarot was first used for divination.
As early as 1540, a book entitled The Oracles of Francesco Marcolino da Forli shows a simple method of divining from the coin suit of a regular playing card deck. Manuscripts from 1735 (The Square of Sevens) and 1750 (Pratesi Cartomancer) show rudimentary divinatory meanings for the cards of the tarot, as well as a system for laying out the cards. In 1765, Giacomo Casanova wrote in his diary that his Russian mistress frequently used a deck of playing cards for divination.
In 1781 Antoine Court de Gébelin wrote a speculative history and a detailed system for using the tarot to fortell the future. From Gébelin's time forward, various explanations have been given for the origins of tarot, most of them of doubtful veracity. There is no evidence for any tarot cards prior to the hand-painted ones that were used by Italian nobles.
You're better off reading stars or tea leaves, or even lumps on peoples heads (Frenology) ... unless you're doing it for money, then, just about any Tarot cards will do, because if someone's going to PAY you to defraud them then they probably aren't concerned about the quality of cards.

There are many different tarot card spreads, some of the basic ones you will see in other people's writings here such as the Celtic or Celtic spread, there are many others and you can find them in a book by Eden Gray, that you can get at any public library or bookstore.

The Celtic Cross is supposed to give a broad picture of the person and their situation.
Why do religious people post non-answers to questions like this? If people wanted biblical verses, they'd ask for them. This person wanted Tarot information.

Tarot readings come from heart and soul. You learn your basics, and then throw them out. Go with gut feelings. But the easiest to learn it the traditional Rider-Waite Deck. about 20.00. that is the easiest.

If you are sincere about wanting forgiveness of you sin and humble your self and pray believing that God will forgive you He can and I believe that He will.
He knows the very intents of your heart. You can lie to and deceive me but you can't deceive Jesus Christ.
Any attempts to deceive man or Christ are sins. Do not be foolish and risk your own soul.
