cat.. it's just my personality. dogs seem to be all 'in your face i love you i need to constantly be by you' and that just annoys me. there is nothing wrong with them.

This would depend on the person. I have both but they are all totally different personalities. Cats are very independent. Dogs need company.
Cats can entertain themselves, dogs get into trouble if left to their own devices.
Some people enjoy the attention dogs give, they are very loveable and if in a good environment never disappoint when you need a friend. Cats usually couldn't care less (I've run across some cats that are just as friendly as dogs however).
It is a question of personal preference. Both can make great pets. :)

I love having both, but I will always have a pet cat!

Cats can basically take care of themselves; aside from providing their food & water all you really absolutely have to do is clean their litter box! Most places also will allow a pet cat before a dog! Cats are quiet and usually entertain themselves! Cats are also so smart and loyal!

I love my dogs, but dogs have a lot of needs; they need to go outside to use the bathroom, they need exercise, they need fed and watered (obviously all pets do), they need bathed and groomed, they need to play and get attention, etc.! With dogs you also have to worry about them attacking or biting and barking!

Comments on above answers:
You CAN teach a cat tricks, also! Dogs can have tempers TOO! Cats love to cuddle TOO! You have to POTTY train a dog, so both need trained! Dogs will jump up with food TOO, both need broken of the habit!

Cats....

They can be just as friendly and affectionate as a dog, sometimes more so. they will greet you, sit on your lap, rub their head against your legs, sleep with you and just be wonderful calm loving pets. They go to the bathroom on their own, all they require is a littler box change a few times a week. Leave out dry food and fresh water and they are good to go. They do not have a body smell, will clean themselves, though a bath is called for once and awhile anyway. You can leave them home alone for extended periods of time. They do not require constant attention or a watchful eye.

Are much smarter than dogs, can be trained easily and after all I have yet to see a Cat obedience school.. maybe that is because dogs are so dumb they HAVE to go to school to learn how to behave YET a cat is well behaved without having to go to school.

Dogs are smelly, stink so bad even if you bathe them every few days.. you HAVE to walk them or at least scoop their poop out of your yard and it is not nearly as compact and dry as a cat's. They act so stupid, like to jump up and slobbery licks and "kisses" you can not leave food down full time because the stupid things will eat until they burst so you have to get them on a feeding schedule. They hump your leg, have drippy parts and are so so unsanitary... and smell up your house.

CAT!!!!!!!! cats have attitude and aren't allways in your face and have their own personality's, dogs are almost all the same, just wanting attention. With cats you can leave it alone for a couple of days and it will get mad at you but it gets over it, dogs you have to be with 24/7

Personally, I wouldn't mind one of both. Ac cat makes a better house pet, because of the fact that you don't have to constantly worry about taking them outside. I like dogs, too. They tend to make a better companions on a personal note, but it's best to make them strictly outdoor animals; unless you have the patience to house train.

I would definately pick a dog over a cat.. A dog will sit and listen to you, and be your companion for life. They learn tricks better than a cat, and you don't have to litterbox train them. Not to mention if the animal is treated right it will protect you and your family.

depends on the person. I like both really. Dogs take a little more work then cats though. Cats basically take care of themselves other than you making sure they have food, water, toys, etc.

does it matter what one wants a cat or a dog as ones pet. i think having a pet is like giving shelter to an animal. taking responsibilities for the pet, giving love to them . i have 2 dogs, 1 cat and 1 parrot. and i love them very much. they are like everything to me especially my friends. when i am stressed out or lonely or feeling low i just talk to them or just hug them. they make me feel better .i think any animal can be your pet even a tiger for that matter if you are ready to love them and take responsibility.

A dog by far. First of all, they're man's best friend. Secondly, they don't $h*+ in the house. (I don't care how clean a litter box is, it still stinks.) You can train them; they listen, obey, and are extremely affectionate and protective. If you want an aloof animal, that really only cares about itself, and wants you to treat it like a deity...get a cat.

Dog (although I have and love both) because I am a nurturing person and a dog lets me hug and squeeze and coo over more than a cat.
