the ocean depths... the hand of god... outer space...under the bed...

can you find comfort in the great unknown? can you pass that comfort on to another? how?

hint: can curiosity, faith, mystery, or knowledge help you?

Looks like I'm disagreeing with everyone who has answered so far. No, I can find no comfort in the unknown. By its very definition, comfort suggest the known, indeed, the familiar. Consider the various terms associated with the word: "comfort food" is food we eat again and again because it makes us feel good; a "comfort zone" is a place we return to because it's safe and secure and entirely known to us; even the holiday "comfort and joy" intimates the happy and the familiar.

I'm sorry but comfort needs must be directly associated with the known, NOT the unknown. I think your other answerers are confusing fascination, even intrigue, with comfort. These are very different terms. I suppose those with devout religious faith can claim to find comfort in the "great unknown" but even that is based entirely on faith and belief, not something actually known.

As for passing comfort on to another, yes, one can absolutely do that (it's quite nice, too). But here again, it is known, intimately so, not unknown. I'm really astonished by the preceding answers. I believe it irrefutable that comfort, by definition, is absolutely known and cannot be unknown. Anything else is oxymoronic.

the known is boring. thats why kids walk into woods, or why Christopher Columbus went across the ocean. he wanted to proove the world wasnt flat. he didnt really know. he could have died a very strange death actually. "I'm God. so lets see... you dies by falling off the planet?" "O, yes God. I was in my boat, thinking the world was round, but i guess i was wrong. I just fell right off. It was kinda weird though. Then i suffocated in space, and here i am. Are there casual Fridays?" "Well, since your intentions are good, and you died a good man, ill give you a casual Friday's pass." that was random o know. but anyway the point is, he didn't know if that would happen or not. it was un=known, and because he didn't know, and he wanted to, it wasnt so much comfort, the comfort comes in discovering. the actual joy was in the adreniline rush, and not knowing what was going to happen next. and as far as under the bed, my bed has no under it, so you can't really be fascinated by it. if you are not me, you'll probabl get lost in all the stuff anyway.

Because the unknown is not completely understood and can therefore be governed by imagination, it is a grateful getaway from reality... That comfort is easier found on another's own than received.

I am greatly attracted to the unknown. The known becomes a mundane burden for me. Although useful and never forgotten, the known loses its appeal after a length of time. I'll take exploration over staying at home any day.
