I don't know who you've been talking to or hanging out with but i get loans and noone says anything to me or judges me about it. I have never seen anyone negative towards me because of that. Are you going around bragging to people that you get loans or what. Or is it your best friend just jealous because you get lons and she can't?Other than that you must be doing or saying soemthing because i don't see people getting mad at someone just because they get student loans. Change your friends woman and quit being so negative yourself!

I think there's a few reasons behind this.
First of all, there is a strong prejudice in society against intelligence. This dates back to Adam and Eve who cast the human race into sin by eating the apple from the tree of knowledge. They questioned who they were. The ruling forces of power (then the Church, now global corporations) don't want us to question our place in the social hierarchy.
So in some social situations when people make detailed intelligent points they can often be ridiculed for doing so.
Students generally come from relatively affluent families and social backgrounds. Indeed, the examination system that now runs from junior school onwards, can be regarded as little other than a method for social stratification. It is understandable that people from less affluent backgrounds, those that were not encouraged to take pride in their learning and to progress to higher education, feel a little bitter towards those who had such support and opportunities and who will probably go on to earn more money through the fortunate circumstances of their birth.
So, yes, generally I think it is jealousy from people who haven't had a good education. There is a strong element of class consciousness in this.
The situation has probably eased over the years, much because higher education is becoming less about establishing elite social groups in society and more concerned with getting people off the dole and making them pay large costs for it. Getting students into debt serves another function in almost forcing them to find highly paid jobs in order to pay back the debts.
Graduates nowadays struggle to get jobs with high salaries until they have worked for many years so I do empathise with your complaint.

THANK YOU.. I feel exactly the same thing... my parents neighbor has started to turned her head everytime I meet her when I'm home from college... Can you believe that?! She thinks I should be working, but I am.. I have a part time job and I study.. what's her problem?! I think it's because she's never had the opportunity, and because she doesn't really understand what university is.. People who haven't been there, can't picture it.. that's where the prejudice comes from. Also.. she can't understand sitting in the library is actually preparing me for a job later...
She actually gossiped about me and my two other college-going sisters to other neighbors to tell how lazy we are!!!

It's possible that there's some remnant "daddy's buddy" mentalist circa 1968 still floating around...from a time when only the rich (or kids of the rich) could get into college and they went so they wouldn't be drafted to fight in Vietnam. So they just hung out and partied. (Ever wonder how some of these party frats got their start...?)
Most of the people who go to college now really have to work for it. We hold part time jobs, sink into massive sandtraps of debt, before we've really gotten a chance to start our lives! All in the hope that that little piece of paper will allow us and our families a better shot at life.
And still we get no respect. *Sigh.*
Oh well, keep at it, and don't let anyone get you down!

Many times, college students are perceived as being immature. Just don't let these people bother you, as they may very well just be jealous, as you suspected.
I waited until I was thirty to go to college, and now I wish I wouldn't have waited so long. Being one of the older students, sometimes the younger ones are very irritating, but I know that they are just young and trying to find themesleves, so I just let them be.
I think it is very admirable that you are doing whatever it takes to get the educatiuon you want. Keep up the good work!

I live in a student city... everything is done for the students... special buses... student discounts... loads of pubs and clubs... all the fast food they can eat...
and still they complain... and they make a lot of mess... and scum landlords buy up properties and turn areas into student ghettos...
and still the universities want more students...
they don't live their permanently (and are unlikely to stay after graduating) so they see the city as a rubbish dump for their crap!!!
Personally, I HATE THEM!!!

I have one son with a master's degree who worked while he was in college, and another who is currently in college who is also working. I admire what you are doing. Keep studying, keep working. You don't need to worry about those judgmental people.

yup... it's just jealousy (aka hatin)... most of the older folks know that we students will graduate from the university and will start off making more than they make after 20 years in the same job... pure envy
