There were only 13 colonies because that all of the good land that there was.
Maine was to cold, and not good for farming, and Florida was controlled by Spain.
Also there weren't any more inland colonies because England didn't want to fight the Indians for it. This is one of the reasons for the revolutionary war. Americans wanted more land, but the English didn't want to protect the settlers from the Indians. During this time the English were fighting the French and they could spare any troops.

The 13 English colonies stretched the length of the Atlantic seaboard coast from Maine to Georgia. (Florida to the south was already claimed and being settled by the Spanish.) (Canada to the north was already claimed and being settled by the French.)
When a country sets up colonies, they primarily start along the coast and slowly expand inland/inward.
There are only 13 original English colonies because there was no more coastal territory available to colonize.

Because the Thirteen Colonies were the FIRST British colonies in North America that rebelled, signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 becoming independent sovereign states, thereby establishing the United States of America.

there werent a lot of colonists, so they didnt need as much space as we have today. when the population got bigger, they needed more room so they added more states.
