Have you run your network setup wizard? Do both computers have the same workgroup name?

Run your network setup wizard and make sure to type the same workgroup name on both computers. Then make sure your running the same game and version on both. then make sure that when you start a lan game (if its on option) you choose the same protocal. like tcp/ip or tpx etc. Good luck!

Yes a network hub is all you need, but you also have to set up a home or small office network. To do this go to control panel > Network and Internet connections then click Network setup wizard , remember the workgroup name has to be the same on both computers

listen my best advise buy a switch there hub are not that good 'cause that technology is old they have no inteligent at all and nowq even transmit at the same speed that receive buy a switch you'll see the diference you gonna have full duplex 100% receiving and transmitting you can get good ones very cheap.

A hub is fine. I take it all you want to do is play local area connection games and not get out on the internet. This is how it's Done.
On a windows XP machine.
Goto computer one.
Start...Control panel...Network Connections...Local Area Connection.
Right Click on Local area connection and choose properties.
Under "the connection uses the following items"...choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click properties button.
Write down your settings before continueing in case you want to undo these changes later.
Set IP address to 192.168.1.5
Set Subnet Address to 255.255.255.0
Gateway is not needed if you only want a Local area network.
Neither is DNS info. Click OK, Click OK again.
Goto computer two.
Start...Control panel...Network Connections...Local Area Connection.
Right Click on Local area connection and choose properties.
Under "the connection uses the following items"...choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click properties button.
Write down your settings before continueing in case you want to undo these changes later.
Set IP address to 192.168.1.6
Set Subnet Address to 255.255.255.0
Gateway is not needed if you only want a Local area network.
Neither is DNS info. Click OK, Click OK again.
Make sure the firewall is off on both machines.......
Start...Control panel...Network Connections...Local Area Connection.
Right Click on Local area connection and choose properties. Choose the advanced tab at the top and choose the settings button, Make sure firewall is off.
Now Test connectivity on machine one.
Start...Run....cmd , then click OK. A black dos prompt appears.
Ping 192.168.1.6, you should get replys.
Now Test connectivity on machine two.
Start...Run....cmd , then click OK. A black dos prompt appears.
Ping 192.168.1.5, you should get replys.
Your local game should work now.
Go back to your TCP/IP Settings and place them back to the way they were before hand if you want to change things back.
