you need a very good grasp of maths to be a chemical engineer.
It also helps if you appreciate physical chemistry, although not to degree level.
Physics is more important than chemistry for a chemical engineer

how will you know if a chemical reacts to what amount? how will you predict if a compound will work to produce new compounds? physics is important.

You may have to know what kind of equipment do you
need for an experiment. How high temeperature
to resist (or acid or rust...), need some explosion-proof,
or can you do in in the kitchen pot.
