A higher than normal white blood cell count can result from bacterial infections, inflammation, leukemia, trauma, or stress. Your doctor should do further testing to determine what the exact cause may be.

elevated WBCs usually indicate an infection of some sort. Differentiation of the types of cell can further narrow that down to bacterial or viral, or a parasite. The lymphocyte subgroup generally indicates viral.
