I believe this is not actually the case, but is a byproduct of the fact that gay men are often (but not always) effiminate and lesbians are often (but not always) more masculine.
While a gay individual may desire someone of the same sex that would be considered an "ideal" for that sex, they are limited in their pool of choices to others that are also gay. Therefore they often end up with someone who is less masculine as men go or feminine in the case of women than they might choose had they the opportunity to connect with their ideal.
Another confounder in your observation is the fact that it is very difficult to know who is straight and who is gay around you. Who is out of the closet and who is not? Which individuals feel secure enough to actually seek a mate in light of the homophobia they may face? Unfortunately, these social pressures tend to reduce the degree to which those you observe represent a true sample of the homosexual population.

Ok puting aside the weirdness of this question and the sheer ignorance of some of the replies I'll try to answer it the best I can.
Gay men DO NOT feel particularly attracted to effeminate guys, most would relaly prefer straight acting guys, and many gay men's fantasies would actually be a straight guy!
Some lesbian women do prefer a more masculine woman, I don'tr know why but in any case tehre is nothing wrong with it.

In asking this question, I am guessing you don't know many gays or lesbians. I'm queer, so I'm going to chime in. Not all gay men are attracted to feminine acting men. Most gay men I know are what most folks call "straight acting" a few of the more effeminite guys I know prefer "butch" guys. Manly men in Levis and leather. A few of the butch guys like feminine guys. Some guys have no preference. As for lesbians, some I know are total femmes and they like butches. Then again, I have girlfriends who are total femmes, just like me, and we are totally involved. I tend to like femmes and butches. Mainly for me, it's the kind of person she is.
In the gay/lesbian community, there is no real need for there to be a "man" and a "woman" in the relationship. It's just two people who care about each other. When it all is said and done, there is someone out there for everyone, no matter their preference.

To me, alternate lifestylers have had a bad experience with the other sex in their lives causing their minds to go into defensive mode. I've met over 50 or more gays and lesbians who tell me the same story of trauma be it friend, family, or stranger to completely discount it as rubbish. To me they are attempting to fill a void within their lives that their mind has created during the trauma event. They attempt to build relationships that are easy and safe for them instead of facing life head on and overcoming the problem. An even better question would be" Why is it that lesbians, who dislike males, use plastic male genitalia for pleasure?" That is a question that hints at the hypocricy that is the gay lifestyle. p.s. sorry if i offend but in life we all have to "DEAL" with something so deal with it.

Alot of replies suggest that the question is based on a stereotype. So why then do the majority of gay men act feminine? In those gay pride rallies most of them wear leotards, put makeup on and prance around like ballerinas with rainbows. I think the askers question was a good one. I think the answer is a chemical imbalance. I think Freud explained it. Its something to do with their relatonships with their mother or father in early childhood.

Now that's not really true. I know quite a few manly-men couples, and girly-girl couples. It's not fair to assume that masculine people will seek out feminine people, same sex or not

b/c gay men are normally feminine, not that all are, just all we see are feminine. and gay women, they tend to be more butch, trying to be like a man. but that doesn't have to be the way.

Is it a question of dominance? In a happy heterosexual relationship the male is slightly more dominant than the female. Maybe homosexual relationships work the same way. I don't know, just a study I read about once.

There always needs to be a man figure and a woman figure in a relationship. Makes me wonder about the belief that homosexuality is natural.
