I have timewarner and it's awesome, but if not in your area, ask your phone company -- you will also need to get a wireless card. (I have a dell laptop and still had to get the card)

Get a WAN card with one of the wireless carriers (e.g. verizon wireless, cingular wireless, ...etc.) About 3 months ago, Verizon Wireless had a promotion that if you signed up for a 2-year unlimited usage contract for $59.95 a month, you could get the card free. I am not sure if they have some different promotions going on right now. If you just get the card by itself without the service, it would cost you about $120.

There are effectively 2 elements to this question. 2 kinds of prompt connectivity are available. a million. you may have a cable/dsl connection on your position and then hook up a prompt Router to this so that you do not ought to run cables round your position. in this equipment the Telco organization can advise no matter if cable/dsl is accessible on your belongings; there are obstacles with appreciate to distance from the nearest Telco change. 2. even if you should purchase a particular modem and hook as a lot as a prompt broadband connection although this service does have extra intense regulations on availability. The link below reflects prompt coverage and has multiple hyperlinks to agencies which furnish those amenities contained in the Illinois section. i'm in Australia so i'm not particular what you'll pay for one of those modems yet i'm guessing round US$one hundred. Some public libraries offer it FREE. Go inside, or sit in the parking lot.
Some hotels and motels offer it FREE.
Some restaurants and DONUT shops offer it FREE.
Or GET an account yourself through DSL or Cable. Then buy a Wireless Router.

You can get a service plan from Verizon or Sprint. You put another wireless card in the side of the computer, and you can use it anywhere. Roads, in the middle of parks, you name it.

regular wi-fi doesn't work unless they are a transmitter close .so you need a wireless card from one of the cell phone companies. I use sprint but others are ok I guess.

You need to buy a wirelessG card and a router. Might I suggest a linksys wirelessg with speedbooster. It's a great setup and 54g is fast for networking.
