You have several choices available to you in researching complex files and analyzing their data:

You could do it by date, subject, topic.

Examine the files and determine what is important for your study, or project. Set up a system that could fish out this data for you, such as Microsoft excell.

Having a plan would be the biggest step, and it could be time consuming, but in the end good planning would be your most efficient way of doing this type of research.

To analyze any mass of material you have to know two things

First - what questions are you trying to answer with the material. This step can be a process. You can start with something as simple as what is this file about. Then let that question grow into another one.

Second - how and why is this file organized. Whoever put the file together had both a system and a reason for using that system. You need to determine both. In some cases the reason may be to make it hard for anyone to analyze the file. Be alert for this possibility.

By shifting back and forth between the two steps you will end up mastering the information.
