Unlike other professionals Architects are not supposed to end up as employees or wage earners until they retire. Successful Architects are Private Practitioners and businessmen that engage not only in Architectural practice but also in other Architecture related businesses like Construction and Real Estate Development.

You'll learn a lot of skills in Architecture not only drawings & CAD but also Engineering computations, Quantity surveying, Construction supervision, Project Management, Construction Contracting, Real-estate Development, etc.

I advise you be employed in different Architectural, Engineering & Construction firms for at leat 5 to 10 years after graduation then become a Private practitioner-businessman and use all the skills you learned from Architecture and from your work experiences. Become a contractor and a Real-Estate developer if you have the capital. You can venture also into CAD outsourcing and CAD Print shop manager. As you venture into these businesses you'll stumble into a lot of prospective clients and commisions.

To be a good Architect you should be both an Artist and a Mathematician.
Being an artist you should have a lot of imagination in thinking not only about your Architectural projects but also in thinking of ways on how to earn a living,.
But don't forget, be sure to pass the licensure exams to practice Architecture legally.

Good Luck.

I am an architect in southern california. I've been in teh field since 98. Right now the market is incredible and the demand for expereinced personel is through the roof. Keep in mind though that Architecture as a career is very sensitive to the economy. So there are good times and bad times. I anticipate the market will stay strong for another 5 years at least. This however is very dependent on your location.

My father's an architect, and he loves it. But as he said, it's not all drawing pretty pictures. You have to be very good at math and physics. One time my cousin, who is also an architect, "guessed" at some figures when designing a weight-bearing beam, and if the contractor hadn't been smart enough to catch it, the building would have fallen down. You will also have to deal with contractors and make sure they are following the plans and specifications, and coordinate the different types of contractors to be sure the electrician finishes up before the drywaller begins, etc. Finally, you have to be very detail-oriented. You need to be able to specify exactly how many of what goes into each building, from what size nails to the thickness of the drywall to the type of doors you want used. And even though you can be very creative, you have to take into account your client's budget and desires. But like I said, Dad loves it, and he's owned his own firm for almost 35 years.
