Sorry, new to the mp3 thing.

My player came with a recommendation for a subscription service, but I just don't want to download that much music.

You can download as little or as much as you want from a typical subscription service (like RealNetworks, Napster, or MTV Urge [which I use]). You pay a monthly or annual fee and you have access to as much (or, again, as little) as you want.

You can also buy individual songs from any of the digital music sites.
