The definition of opposite is: of the same general class yet completely different . Is not love and hate in the same general class? Yes they are, they are both strong emotions and directly opposite of each other. Saying that hate is not the opposite of love is like saying night is not the opposite of day or black is not the opposite of white or good is not the opposite of evil. There is no emotion connected to indifference or apathy, they are not in the same general class as love and hate; therefore they cannot be the opposite of love.
Hate or hatred is an emotion of intense revulsion, distaste, enmity, or antipathy for a person, thing, or phenomenon. It is generally attributed to cause a desire to avoid, restrict, remove, or destroy the hated object. The emotion is the opposite of love.

apathy is said to be the opposite rather than hate, because it shows more of a total lack of feeling. While hate can often come from a situation with love involved.

Apathy. Love is haveing strong affection for someone or something. Hate is having a strong dislike for something. In both love and hate, you care about the object of your emotions, therefore "caring" is something they both have in common. Apathy is the lack of emotion, not caring.

no, that's too extreme that it's incorrect. the opposite of love is to not love, it doesn't necessarily mean hate. i think the opposite of love is ... unacknowledgable. Because to love someone, you think about them and care for them. If you dont acknowledge someone is to not care about them or of them
