Catholic - derived, through Latin, from the Greek adjective καθολικÏÏ, meaning "general", "universal".
It is used to refer to those Christian Churches which maintain that their Episcopate can be traced directly back to the Apostles, and that they are therefore part of a broad catholic (or universal) body of believers.

It simply means universal.
HOWEVER in the context of the Catholic and Orthodox Faith its full connotation means "that Church which all individuals are called to and is THE instrument by which God gathers all peoples and nations to Himself, so that they might have eternal life". The Church is the door by which people enter into the wedding feast of the Bridegroom and into the Kingdom. The Church is called universal because there is only one and there are, never were, and never will be, any others.
The Church is also called universal, because its membership includes all those on earth who are working out their salvation in fear in trembling (so say St. Paul), those individuals who are undergoing final theosis (or purgatory as the Latins call it), and those individuals who are in heaven.

Cath as in catheter is; "to open"
so in being Catholic pronounced; Ca-tholic
(as in alcoholic) the correct enunciative signals the opened one the proper response of thought in kind
thus,
to be catholic is to be open to all in truth, which has been venerated as Truth so as to usher the open into understanding...
w-out study I am inclined to think that its' origin may be found in the Greek language
Thank you for the proferred postulate.
Peace.
