if you do want a compression program, don't use WinZip. Why? Winzip only opens WinZip format, and many other free or paid compression program do the same AND more. WinRAR supports zip too, and it's own rar, and it also supports many other format. Other example, 7-zip, it is free, and it supports zip, rar, and it's own 7z format among many other countless format.
And if I'm not wrong, sometimes, these other program can compress file smaller than Winzip, even in zip format itself.

I'm cannot beleive that WinZip could still survive to this day, especially since there is many other free and better competitor.

Try winrar instead. it will open zip files, as well as many other compressed files. It is also a free trial, but keep using it and it will keep working.
