Go to a toy store and look around. Most toys these days have suggested age ranges printed on the box so you will know that it is developmentally appropriate. Get him something you think it is fun, something colorful and bright. Babies this age love to make music and they love to see cause and effect so something with buttons or switchs, things to pull... My friends baby just had her first birthday and I got her a little plasic piano. When my daughter turned one a lot of her books, which she loves.

I know you're excited, but a 1-year-old doesn't know it's hist birthday. I attended a 1-year-old birthday party this spring and took a helium balloon for a gift that I got at the dollar store. Hands down, it was his favorite gift.

By the way, I saw a story on TV about Baby Einstein products, which was basically putting it down.

Start an IRA for him. If you can't do this, then at least open a savings account and put some money in it. At one year old, the baby has no idea it's his birthday, and when he opens his presents, will probably be more interested in playing with the box and wrapping paper than the toy.

There are SO many educational products out there...go for something "old fashioned" and tried and true...blocks! There's a GREAT product if the parents are big sports fans. Go to www.mascotopia.com and check out all of the collegiate, major league baseball and nba merchandise...or you can go to www.babyfanatic.com

I know both of the people who own these companies and they are committed to quality.

I got my niece a book. Start their life off right, you can never have too many educational things for babies. If not that, then Baby Einstein is really good also.
