How can I permanently delete visited sites on my computer? I have used the clear private data button on my browser as well as deleted the temporary internet files folder but whenever I use my google desktop search bar to search for these sites to confirm deletion, the search bar finds these files 'cached' in my browser. How can I permanently clear this cache as I've used the 'clear cache' button but to no avail.

If you want to download CCleaner, get it here-
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx
choose Slim or Basic. it's free.

when you open CCleaner, you will have options both in IE, firefox, Opera, Flock Google toolbar etc

delete index.dat files as well as cache(history) and temporary files

in ccleaner options>settings>secure deletion, choose 3 passes or 7 passes although this does slow down cleaning.

If you want added security, you will need to bleach the free space on your hard drive, ie overwrite already deleted files beyond recovery. Choose something like Cyberscrub Privacy Suite or Webroot Window Washer

It depends - if, like Gary Glitter, you are doing this to escape prosecution for some reason - give up. You can never truly get rid of files from the HDD

if for some legitimate reason ie trying to prevent stuff being seen by your little ones do a search through windows explorer for the websites that have dropped themselves onto your cache and do a manual delete

If you use IE then you can delete your history by going to Control Panel / Internet Options and there use the Clear History.
If you use Mozila Firefox then Tools/Options On the History tab press Clear Browsing history now. U can use Ctrl+Shift+Del but this will delete all stored passwords, cookies, temp Internet files

Go to Tools...

Temporary Internet Files
Delete Files (or Go 'Settings' then 'view Files' to delete)

You might want to delete the cookies too....

and History
Clear History

go to the "tools" tab in the upper right corner of the screen and then choose "internet options" and then under the "general" tab under "history" click on "clear history". You can also set the time after which the history will be deleted right next to the "clear history" button.

good luck.

Clear the history and cache. The options to do this can be found on your browser's internet options dialog.

go to the tools tab as already explained and clear internet history and so on.
but before you leave it put a shortcut on your desktop to link up with this ''internet options'' so you can go straight there in future.
and change the name of the shortcut to something vague to avoid attention.
(highlight it, F2 key then write over it)

Take your hard drive out and smash it to pieces, but the details have probably been saved somewhere else too, not just on your computer. In future get a new name and use a cybercafe.

no matter if you do clear that content, you cannot access or clear the hidden database in every pc which records every single mouse and keyboard click from day 1.
or at least I don't know if someone can, I didn't hear of it.

Install CCleaner.com and run it ( it will clear the browsers history if you are using Firefox or IE)
if you are using opera you will have to clear it manually, by
tools-->pref.->advanced->history->clear
