Is it the words, the voice, or the music?

The music.
More people can hum you a few bars than can quote you a few lyrics. The music is the hook. How many times have you listened to a song. Decided you like it - THEN went to go find what the lyrics where.

How often do you see lyrics to a song and think - wow - those are GREAT words - strong and powerful. Are you sure this is a song - I've never heard of it. And when you do hear it you're still moved by the lyrics - but not necessarily the 'song'.

As for the voice - that goes with the quality of the musicians on the song. A bad voice (or guitar, keyboard, whatever) can kill a good song. But that exact same song can still be good - it just needs a different voice put on it.

It's still comes back to the music.
The notes, their arrangement, and instrumentation.
A lot of music does not even have a voice, or lyrics. Those are still great songs. But voice without music - that's a poetry reading.

Personally, I think it's the music because I've heard songs that I loved the lyrics, but I really didn't like the song/music. I like some songs because of the music, but the lyrics are just stupid. I think any song has to have some kind of "draw" to it, something to attract a listener and to me, it's the music. But the words are important, too.

Honesty. If the writer lives or believes it, it will touch your soul on a personal level.....Thats why Neil Young is the best......
