Because consistency is the nature of the Creator alone - everything that is created -including life - is, by default and definition, changeable.
Why: because they cannot be otherwise
What the wisdom behind inconsistency is, is another question. And, although hundreds of theories and philosophical views have attempted to answer this question, no one has the ultimate answer except the Creator.

You would define your life by time at times :) That is to say before you were 12 now your 22, youve changed in capability and mass. So when you look back on your life youre really not looking at 5 yrs ago youre looking at the diff. in change between now and 5 yrs ago.

Because we haven't decided what is right or wrong, what we like and what we dislike. We are still figuring it out.
Though life will never be without change that is not possible. We just need to be changing in the right direction.
