Cat on its feet. Because the bread is an inanimate object whilst the cat can think and will be able to land on its feet.

Obviously!

Anyway the reason why buttered bread always land butter side down is that due to the fact you place it butter side up on the counter when it falls it will have to rotate in the air and thus fall butterside down!

From a strictly scientific view, the bread does not always land butter side down; although I admit it's landed butterside up about 2% over my entire remembered life. :-) Cats also do not always land on their feet, and I've seen them NOT land on their feet much more often than I've seen bread land butter side up. Still, with cats having muscles, unless someone overinterferrs, the cat will land on its feet before the butter lands side down. :-)

On the other hand, this is a common riddle; riddle-speculation says that, just above the ground, the cat with the buttered bread tied to its back will rotate forever.

You may get the answers you want if you put this in the correct category; the riddle category.

The cat lands on the feet, and the bread on its back flips with the buttered side down on its back

Ah well now theres a good question but if you think about it its easy to answer. Cats are heavier than bread so they would land first on their feet and the bread would land after, butter side down, because it wouldn't fall as fast as the cat. Simple!

I'm going away to try it, I'm into science.

Ingredients; Butter 1oz - Bread 1 slice - Cat - one stray
Tools; one knife

5 minutes later My results are as follows I spread butter onto the cats tummy and then tapped a slice of bread (buttered) to its back.

The poor moggy was confused especially when I through the ball of string out of the upstairs window .. he leaped out after it .. rotated three times and then landed on its back.

Conclusion .. The buttered bread will always land buttered side down.

Both happen as expected.

Because cats are more dextrous than bread, kitty quickly flips in midair, freeing herself from the bread, and hits the ground first on all fours.

Noticing the impending encounter with the still falling grease-laden piece of starch which would mess up her fur terrible, kitty scampers out of its way --- leaving the bread to land on the floor, butter side down!

If the cat cannot free itself from the bread, then the resulting impulses would counter each other. This might cause the cat and bread to be flung into orbit (if the cat/bread forces were less than gravity), which would be a good thing. Or, the cat/bread combination would become of greater intensity than the gravitational pull of the earth. Then, cat and bread would throw the earth off of its orbit. So, ladies and gentlemen, please don't try this at home.

they're so fussy at the same time though
Quite stuck up really.

depends which way you have the bread fastened on the cats back butterside up or down as the cat will always land on its feet, Laws aof science and gravity or something. When i lived in Spain i was on the 3rd floor and as a kitten my now 2 year old cat slipped off the balcony railings and landed on her feet and legged it away in fear. She was unscratched!
