A battery should be used in instances where direct current is needed and/or there is not access to an outlet, or a cord become cumbersome.

Wet cell and dry cell are common battery types and wet cell batteries have a deep cycle variety (for high drain uses).

There are many materials used to make dry cell batteries most have similar properties, though some can be recharged. Also in this category is the (in)famous lithium ion battery which despite its high cost still seems to rule the high end electronics market.

Batteries have standardized voltages (ussually in about 1.5v increments - 9v battery is actually 6 1.5v dry cells) and amperages and come in many sizes, though you can design a battery of any size. Remember that the current and voltage of a battery varies during its lifecycle.
