You bet! But not as much for the baby as for the mother herself.
Nature makes sure the baby gets everything it needs to develop, even if that means that it has to canibalize the mother´s body.
So make sure you have the necessary reserves.

If your health is otherwise good, being underweight or overweight should not be much of a concern. For example, if you're underweight and have problems with your blood pressure being either low or high, you could have problems later in the pregnancy. It's always best to see a doctor as soon as you expect that you are pregnant and follow what he or she recommends, based on your individual health history--and that means doing exactly what the doctor says and showing up for your appointments the whole time you are pregnant.
Eating healthy, exercising, avoiding alcohol, cigarettes and drugs (even over-the-counter medications, like aspirin and cough syrup) will help ensure you have a beautiful, healthy baby.
If you don't have a regular doctor, find a clinic in your area...your life, and your baby's life depend on it!

It can be very harmful to mom and baby. Most docs recommned 40 lbs of weight gain when underweight during pregnancy to make up for the lack of reserves the mom had to begin with.
My OB is pretty good about discussing the weight issues at each visit. If there is a concern, he voices it, if there isn't he doesn't say a word. When a woman wants to become pregnant, it's best that she avoid doing anything that might harm the baby before a positve pregnancy test. If you make sure your body is fit ahead of time, there is less to worry about during the pregnancy.

You'll most likely gain more weight. I was 98lbs when I got pregnant with my son and I gained 70lbs while pregnant. I lost 35lbs immediately after having him (he was a heifer at 10lbs 4oz) and within a matter of months I was down to 115lbs. A healthy weight for my height. I'm pregnant again (4 months) and I have gained the recommend 5lbs. Your body will know that it needs to pack on more weight if you are underweight. Don't worry so much just make sure that you eating properly.

Why are you underweight? I think as long as you're eating a balanced diet, getting enough to eat, drinking plenty of water, and taking your vitamins, you should be ok. You should address any concerns you have about your weight and your baby's development with your doctor. Some women just don't gain much weight during pregnancy despite all of that. If you're underweight because you're afraid of gaining weight, not eating enough because of stress, or an eating disorder, that's not healthy, and something you need to talk to your doctor about.
I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy. Congratulations and good luck.

If you're consistantly not gaining as you should, then yes, it's a bad thing. Not gaining weight means that you (or your baby) are not getting enough nutrients. I was underweight at the start of my pregnancy, however, and ended up gaining 45lbs, due to my body "catching up" to where I needed to be. Usually you end up gaining more weight than usual if you were underweight in the beginning. If you started underweight and are gaining little to no weight, especially in the second half of your pregnancy, then your doctor will probably share his or her concern and discuss your diet.

You risk of delivering premature baby or lower weight baby.
Talk to your health care provider to know if you are seriously underweight and what best can be done.
