yes you can chart life's progress. if you follow the innate inner compass we are all programmed with. this allows you to choose who you are going to be and how you are going to be towards other people. ultimately those choices will take you where you want to go in life and acting in manner that suites your character. every person has a "force of character" which pushes you along your path.

You can set goals and estimate how close you are to them.
You can make a time line of your history of reaching your goals.
You can also remember when good things happened to you.
Also choosing what your goals should be can be considered progress.

i notice trends... i used to be "x", now i'm finding myself "y". when did i shift? why? it's similar to recovering from a cold, one day you finally wake up healthy and you ask yourself, "how long did i have that bug?"

trends can sneak up in you without milestones to help mark them.
