Never. A newborn should never get either one. Both wll fill her/him up with something that is not nutritious and make them feel full and not get the nutrition that they really need.

Until a baby is 12 months old, they don't *need* water. They never need juice. And neither should ever get either one before the age of 6 monhts.

I was under the impression that, unless a baby has particular health issues or is working through a dehydrating illness (like diarrhea), they really don't need any extra water in their first months of life. Breast milk and formula are predominantly water and most infants drink about every 2 to 3 hours, so there generally isn't any serious concern regarding dehydration.

I personally didn't start giving my baby any additional "beverages" until she started consuming foods. And initially, I only gave her water... and stil, predominantly, only give her water. As solid food intake increases, liquid intake decreases... so adding a little extra water here and there is good (in my opinion).

I go REAL easy on the juice. Generally, the pediatric guideline that I've come across recommends no more than 4 oz. of juice a day... and that's for a child over the age of one. The key: you want to be careful about sugar intake. Baby doesn't need a lot of sugar and, if you're feeding her plenty of veggies and fruit, you probably don't need to worry about the vitamins in the juice. As another person recommended, you should always dilute your baby's juice. The other person recommended 1 oz. of juice to 3 oz. of water... and I think that's a great starting point. Now that my little one is almost 1, she gets a dilution of 1 oz. juice to 2 oz. water.

As always, the best thing to do is talk to your pediatrician to see what he/she says. They have the best gauge of your baby's health and needs, and would be able to offer the most accurate recommendations regarding water/juice consumption and its timing in your baby's development.

You can give them small amounts of water through a slow-flowing bottle at any time, but remember they can only drink so much, and as water has no nutritional value, it just bloats them. Avoid juices as the sugar content is no good for them. NEVER give a baby juice through a bottle, even if they don't have teeth, it can still cause decay when they do come through. Oh and if you do decide on water, make sure it has been boiled first

I will probably get neg. input for this but a pediatrician told me that you can give a baby water anytime as long as they are getting enough formula to eat. He told me that babies get thirsty just like we do so it was okay. I wouldn't suggest juice until they are much older but I was also told that a little watered down pear juice was really great for constipation. It worked for me anyway. It wouldn't hurt to ask your pediatrician though. You can never be to careful about advice from strangers on this sort of thing. Every baby is different and my son was a big with a capital B eater!

Every baby is different. You can feed a baby water from day one . it is actually good for their mouth because it cleans it which prevents thrush mouth. as far as juice goes. I started mine at about 1-2 months old but I used 1 oz juice to 3 oz water and then gradually increased the juice until it got to full strength as they tollerated it. hope this helps.

Neither juice nor water should be given until at least 6 months and even then, the amounts given should be limited.

NO NO NO NO NO. N-E-V-E-R give a newborn water! It will harm their digestive tract. You can start water and juice at around 4 months old.

You really shouldn't feed a newborn anything other than breast milk or formula, their little digestive tracts can't handle much more than that. Talk with your pediatrician s/he will be able to give you a time table on what foods should be introduced and when. Good luck.
