I think that it would certainly be a good idea to contact the council, at least, even if they say you don't need a licence (though I suspect you will).

Insurance sounds a VERY good idea! You don't know, for example, if somebody is going to be allergic to the makeup you are using. I know it's a very slim chance but it would only take one court case to make you very, very unhappy! Also, it's impossible to predict what might happen as a result of your makeup and what some idiot might try and sue you for!

As for price, it should be 'what you think the market can stand' but you could do a calculation based on time, materials and overheads (license fee, cost of getting your stuff to the site &c). You might like to have a two-tier system - a simple face and a more complicated, super-duper face.

Some photos of happy customers would be a good thing! If you have (or can borrow) a digital camera, ask if you may photograph some of your more spectacular faces, then print them off (A4) and laminate them to decorate the stall. I'm sure that the pulling power of examples of your work would make more people stop!

One last thing ... don't forget to arrange what you are going to do if you need a pee! A friend to stand in at times is a good thing to arrange if you are planning to be mostly on your own.

Have fun and good luck!

Usually charge about £1 - £1.50 per face and yes I think you do need to get permission or let the local council know, It's different at car boot sales and stuff as your on private property, but out on the sea front etc is a different domain and things get complicated, after all you 'could' be anyone and in this day and age thats a bad thing, (No offense meant by the way)

Good luck.

You need a licence in the UK for any street trading, if you are charging money for your services. Contact your local council they can give you all the details. i have paid between £1 to £2 for my children's faces to be painted. Its a great job, the kids love it X

I would think you would def have to contact the Council, I think you need a trading license or something!! Erm perhaps just ask the general switchboard for the Council and they should tell you which department
