Know that we are generally very nice friendly people, learn your way around the underground, watch your bag/purse, be suspicious, im sorry, but it is a sign of the times, but try to enjoy it. London is a wonderful city with much to do with people flocking from all over the world, oh, you may want to know that our Mayor Ken Livingstone charges £8 per day to enter central London with a car, make sure you pay the charge each day if you are driving through the city. You now have an option to pay the following day if you miss the payment the day before, but this is at an increased price of £10.00 - Enjoy.

Avoid London. The Rest of the UK is much better :)

For Stunning Scenery try
Yorkshire
The Lakes
The Welsh Mountains
The Westcountry
The Highlands of Scotland
The Peaks

Things are generally cheaper away from London

If doing a lot of travel in London buy an Oyster Card from a Tube station - it costs £3 and gets you up to 50% off Buses, Trams, The Tube and Docklands. You just load money on it at a machine/ticket office, and just touch it on the readers when you board a bus/enter a station) and once it reaches a spend limit (about £5 per day) it will cost you no more then the equivilent Day Pass - you can return it at the end of your stay and get your £3 back too

Get a London A-Z map, get a tube map, only tip if it says service not included on the bill at restaurants or you fancy the waiter/waitress, don't complain just for the sake of it, be friendly by saying please and thank you, and don't compare everything to the America because London is not the America.

When in London, do as the Londoners do.

certainly not all the previous, pessimistic answers, i've been there a few times and it was the best time i had
the people are friendly, nice places to see, the food's not too bad if you know where to be
Yes it's expensive, but only as expensive as you make it, i stayed in a backpackershotel, nothing luxurious cuz you're only there to sleep anyway

go and see Camden markets and Piccadilly and Covent Garden, go swimming in the ponds in Hampstead, just drop yourself in a park and watch the people, go wish you had money in Harrods, travel by tube,....
need i say more? I LOVE LONDON!!

To carry change for a phone box incase you get lost and buy a London street map. you can get a pocket sized one in most tube stations for around £2. If staying with friends or at a hostel tell them where you plan to go. Just incase...
Good luck & Enjoy your trip.

Don't criticize Australia. All the barmen are from there.

The Eurostar trains for France leave from Waterloo Station, so you can go and get some decent food.
