I have heard my mom tell me from multiple people that they've heard of who got caught and were fined $10,000. This story is a little vague and after looking on the internet, I found news articles saying there is a $10,000 fine for being caught taping or selling pirated movies, but nothing about buying them.

does anyone know if this is true? have you brought pirated movies into the US before? ever been stopped? if u have what happened?
Thanks

I haven't brought pirated movies to the US but it's against their law so it's better not to bring them over.

Buying pirated movies is not a crime. However it's possible that by ordering one from overseas you might be charged with importing pirated materials.

It depends on what you are buying. If the movie has not been released in the US, then it is what's called a "Berne Treaty Exception" and you are safe (I I used to order them all the time).

How do you know that it was pirated in the other country? How does customs know it's not a kosher movie?

It's hard to say for sure without more information, but you would be better off buying pirated stuff from someone in the states--let them take the risk.

No, It's really hard to buy a movie in another country, even if it isn't pirated. There have been so many cases of it happening, they've automatically gone to it being pirated unless you can prove it was purchased at a store, which you probably could cause most people throw away the receipts.

Although the studios and law enforcement are seeking out the people who illegally make the duplications, but that is not to say if they find a pirated copy on you that they will not prosecute you just as aggressively.

No, if you get caught you could face fines, penalties and criminal charges. It is a federal offense that is prosecuted by the FBI. If you bring it in from overseas, you have also violated international laws and could be prosecuted by Interpol. As video piracy is creating and illegal copy, if you are caught being in possession of an obviously pirated video, it is the same as receiving stolen property if they would chose to prosecute you.

Do you really think it is worth it to risk massive fines and imprisonement over a DVD that you could purchase legally for $20?

DVD pirating is illegal everywhere, the laws just happen to be less enforced in some parts of the world
