Core 2 Duo is Intel's new processor family. The Pentium is being faded out and now all processors will be called 'core 2'. Core 2 Duo is Intel new Micro-architecture and boasts great bench test results ( see http://www.cp65.com ). Core 2 Duo used to be called 'Conroe' but that when it was in development. Not to get mixed up - Core 2 Duo is not a platform but a processor.
Definitely wait a couple of months and get a core 2 duo based PC along with Intel's new chip-set. Vast improvement over anything in the market today.

Core 2 Duo will be intel's new chip under the newly redesigned conroe core architecture. release date is on July 23rd. performance of a stock clocked mid-range Core 2 Duo (~$500) beats a $1000 overclocked fx-60.

pentium 4's and pentium d's have been based off the older netburst architecture.

you will need a motherboard that supports conroe, intel will be releasing 965 chipset motherboards specifically for conroe and there will be updates on 975x motherboards to support conroe.

This article might help:

Check back on that site for another article here in early July, once the first official releases are benchmarked against AMD's latest offerings. I would imagine that Intel's newer technology is going to finally take the lead back from AMD in the overall performance category (AMD has had it since the release of the Athlon 64 a couple years ago).
