The best way to remember the difference between living and non living things is "BERLIN GOD C's"

Living things:

Breathe - a better word is respire. Respiration is the process of burning food in the presence of oxygen to produce energy and carbondioxide.

Excrete - this is the removal of waste products from the body.

Reproduce - all living things produce offspring (young ones) with similar characteristics.

Locomote - living things can move a particular body part and can also move from place to place.

Irritability - this is the ability to respond to changes in the external environment.

Nutrition - all living things need to take in food for energy.

Grow - all living things get bigger in size.

Osmo-regulation - this is the ability to maintain the concentration / composition of body fluids.

Die - all living things have to die.

Cells - all living things are made of small living particles called cells. Each cell has a life giving molecule called the DNA (DeoxyRiboNucleic Acid)

An organism is something alive, so there is no such thing as a "non-living" organism, unless you're talking about zombies, or something. What it means to be alive is to be a system of matter that is self-directed and self sustaining, as opposed to non-living matter, which only reacts to outside influences.

Respiration
Irritability
Nutrition
Death
Excretion
Reproduction
Movement
