Because there are people who *ask* stupid questions seriously.

Just look at all the questions about whether the moon landings were faked, or "If man evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" ... or "why do liberals hate America?" These are genuinely stupid questions.

So many times I have thought, "Nah ... that question is so stupid it must be bogus." But then found out I was wrong ... the asker really did mean it.

So after a while, it gets hard to tell the difference between the bogus stupid questions, and the real stupid questions. That's why.

Desiderata: "even the dull and the ignorant they too have their story".

It is experience that teaches us well; articulation is not the precedence of intelligence. In the weakness of the questions and in some cases, the answers, one could find the links that explain the nature of human incapacity, and the answers that empower our quest for advancement. The understanding of human inability is the inspiration behind the work of advancing human divinity. This is the basis of computer technology!

Did you know that Einstein asked himself the question why buildings look short and wide when you watch them on a fast train to figure out the theory of relativity?

In retrospect:

Man, "you have been weighed and measured; and found to be wanting." It doesn't matter. What matters is the insight provided to your readers- that, arrogance is the corrupter of development. It is a pity that you pay back your readers' sincerity with selfish need for vanity.

Nah! You're just kidding. Thanks for making an opportunity for us to grow.

By answering your stupid question seriously they can make themselves feel intelligent. At least that's my theory and one of the biggest factors I can see coming into play.
They look at that question and think wow, I'm surprised anyone could ask such a stupid question, I have to help them understand how stupid that idea is and explain and make them change their opinion.
