The day symbolizes mankind's life.
It's just a day because, compared to other things, like the Earth age, mankind's life is... what? seconds?
So morning would mean early life and night the last third of life, the end of it.
And that's the path man must follow, first in his feet and hands (4), then only in is feet (2), and later on, with the help of a cane (3).
