This fat or blubber is necessary to the whales survival. It insulates the whales body. Ocean water is cold and the extreme depths the whales travel in have severe temperature changes. With out this insulating barrier the water around the animal would draw out all of the heat causing the whale to exert more energy to stay warm. This would limit the amount of energy they would have for swimming. What is amazing is that the baleen whales eat only plankton and krill and are able to obtain their majestic sizes. Along with the blubber whales have amazing muscle tone and strength. I would not want to race a whale.

Whales have 'Blubber' because the depth's of the ocean is so cold especially in the middle away from land as there is nothing for the heat to be contained in, also it's only the larger whales that are larger as the others swim close to shore where it's warmer. They move really slow too so getting the momentum and speed to warm the muscles is harder. I assume you meant the larger whales! So it's all about body heat!

1. They're not fat they're big boned. There's a difference :)
2. They were made that way.
3. The fat on their bodies is good fat. It doesn't clog their arteries or anything.
4. What those guys said(above)

Whales are fat because they eat food. If they cannot eat food they will die. Probably, whales are fat because they eat, breathe and drink. If they are not fat I think they will die.

because whales need their blubber for many reasons, one is maintain its internal body temperature especially when it migrates in subzero conditions. swimming does not work on making you slim but it works primarily in making sure that your blood circulates well and that a significant number of muscles in your body are properly exercised.

ur assuming fat is always unnecessary. in the case of whales, it's genetic and they need it to retain heat and help streamline their bodies (which would help them swim better).

water is cold. fat (blubber) is insulation from the cold. whales are mammals and are endothermic (warm blooded) so they need to preserve their heat.
