I take stuff from the trash as often as I can. I have found several stereos, a clock radio, lots of clothing, I don't keep the clothing I wash it and donate it to a homeless shelter. I also have found dozens of book which I gave to the local library. We live in such a throw away society. Sometimes I get stuff fix it up and give it away to the people who are in need.

In my area in UK people leave unwanted stuff outside charity shops late at night or early in the morning, these items are usually prodded about by hobos and some items taken away , other items are kicked about the place as a form of entertainment!
The UK rubbish laws are just that complete rubbish! If a trash bin has its lid slightly open because of the amount of trash in it, the bin is not collected. It could stay that way forever, so the next step is to place rubbish in a plastic bag and leave that next to the overflowing trash bin, this is very handy for feeding rats.
This wont go on forever because if a complaint is lodged the council workers will collect it all after a suitable waiting time of about 12 weeks, and the owner of the trash bin will get a nasty letter.

Recycling your unwanted stuff is great, but just leaving it on the street is as good as dumping (and is indeed an offence here in the UK) - if it stays there too long before someone wants it then it could get ruined and become worthless, which would be a waste. Properly organised yard sales or giving to charity shops are much better ways of recycling your unwanted items I think and money goes to charity too.

Here in New Zealand, we have an annual Inorganic Rubbish collection , when people put out stuffs that have no use for them and other people collect what could be useful for them before the rubbish collectors do. I think it's a practical method of removing rubbish...saves a great deal of space in the dumps and helps other people too.

me too. at the end of a semester, you go down to one of the big time colleges and you can furnish several apartments with really good furniture. some of the spoiled kids throw out stuff that's practically new.
