My dog got out of my yard today and he got picked up by the animal shelter. He is not neutered. I had to pay a fee for him being at large. That is fine I understand. But they charged me a $20 fee for him not being neutered. In my county there is no law that requires me to have him neutered. Do you think this is fair?

No I do not think this is fair. What if your dog was a purebred stud? Then you would have been fined for earning money. Furthermore, while spaying and neutering dogs and cats is advisable and a darned good idea, it's not the law, not can it be. Again, what if you were a breeder?

On the one hand, it's a small sum of money and it seems petty to fight it, but the principal is much larger. Your local government is trying to tell you what you can and can't do with your "property".

Fight it, girl.

Personally, I disdain the previous answer, he didn't read the question thoroughly and his whole speech about "so they can't breed anymore" is irrelevant to your question because you did not refer to your dog getting neutered. Also, his reference to taxation without representation is utterly worthless in this scenario.

My answer is no, this is completely unfair if you are sure that there are no laws regarding it. If I were you, I would take legal action of some kind. Make sure the twenty dollars isn't for capturing, housing, or food for the dog, because that may be what the fee is genuinely about.

Hmmm I am middle ground here, no its not exactly taxation without representation, but the point was that governments have gotten very good at nickle and diming you at every turn.

And yes if there are no laws in play, it is completely unfair and in theory you could take legal action... but we are talking $20. So if you did take legal action, it would obviously be for the principle of things not the money.

I say leave it be, pick your fights and this one simply is not worth fighting. And think very carefully the next time you vote.

No but they do it anyway it a case of taxation without representation. They charge you because the dog may get pregnant or get another dog pregnant and there are too many unwanted animals in the pound. So they want to take away you ability to have puppies.
