hammer out a few chords first on a guitar or something. then maybe go for lyrics, then develop the melody a bit. tidy up the song structure (verses, chorus's, bridges) last. lyrically, perhaps use personal stuff to keep it relative and give the song focus.

having a drive to make a song helps. The most important thing is to have a message that you want to send out, and then ask yourself why you want to tell everyone this message. when you have a few lines down start thinking about a hook and keep working from there. Put a few guitar chords to go with the melody and the rest of the band follows suit. Call MTV and tell them you suck (they'll put you on) and then shoot a video.
It's not required but I sugest using lots of mirrors and wearing suits in the video, it's kinda flashy and appears to "set you apart"

Ive been writin songs for 5yrs
all you need is a wide range of ideas in mind and be able to express them clearly on things people can relate to relationships, love, life.
before writing a song its best you have some knowledge of the tuning it always works for me ....
that way you get a rough idea of knowing how to present the song and concentrate on which words fit with which beat

You gotta understand poetry first off, when you understand that, then you can write a song.

And, write about your personal experiences - life, love, umm...anything else lol. Don't write about something you have no clue on =)
