Canberra is the seat of federal government for the commonwealth of Australia. It is exactly between Sydney NSW and Meblourne Victoria. Although the land mass is in NSW the are is known as the Australian Capital Terrority or ACT. Its notr a state but a commonwealth terrority.
Canberra was selected as the capital of Australia amonsgt great debate where to make Sydney or Melbourne the capital since federation of tha Australian colonies in 1901.
The name is an aborginal name but I can not think off hand what it means. I think it refers to trible elders meeting place or something similar.
A world wide search for the design of the town was offered and an american Walter burley Griffins design was picked. Lake Burley Griffin was named in his honour.
The Australian War Memorial, Old and New Parliament Houses, Duntroon Military College known as the Australian Defence Force Academy, the High Court of Australia, the Governor General (the Queens representive) and many countries embassies are all housed there. Local government of various issues are managed seperately for services but the Australian Federal Police Community policing section noe does the policing as the ACT Police is defunt. It has its own hospitals, fire service, ambulance but prision services are contracted out to NSW.
Its very pretty and clean to visit but its cold and the last flight out of there is around 4pm so its a bit on the boring side nightlife, but an Assistant Commissioner of Police was murdered there a few years back in his front yard, so i does have some excitement.

And Tim is right..it is bloody boring to live there and it has a very liberal approach to laws as its a territory. Prosutitition, Mail order pornography, surrogate motherhood and talk of gay marriages are all legal there due to the goverance being a terrority not a state.
And its frigging cold as well.....lol

But I think you mean Canberra, Australia (pronounced CANBRA), the national capital population 350,000. It is situated in the Australian Capital Territory which is completely surrounded by the State of New South Wales. It has legalised prostitution and cannabis and is regarded as one of the most boring places to live in Australia.
