I edit 5 days a week on a PC loaded with Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects. This is for broadcast television. I do almost everything inside those programs with an occasional use of Boris Red. It's very effective and cost efficient.

If you have the bucks, you may want to go with a Mac with Final Cut only because more editors are using it. With Final Cut, you'll still probably want Shake, Photoshop, and Live Type. That adds up to a lot of dollars.

I have worked with Mac and PCs over the years. Mac is almost an industry standard for television/film but, for an individual it is big $$$ just to do things like Photoshop and home video editing. Your best bet is to stick with a PC for the lower cost and the vast choices of photo/video editing software for home users. If possible, get one with an AMD processor. They are cheaper, more stable and designed towards those applications. They can be overclocked if needed and the GHz numbers don't really apply the same as an Intel, I run a 1.67 GHz AMD with 1 Gb ram that blows the snot out of my buddies 2.5 GHz P4. You can get a Mobo/CPU combo with AMD that compares quite well to one with Intel for hundreds less. If your not that tech on building one, complete ones are still alot cheaper. This is from one online site.

Acer Aspire T135 AMD Sempron 3300+ 2GHz/ 512MB DDR / 200GB HDD / DVD±RW Dual-Layer / DVD-ROM / Flash Media Reader / Windows XP Home / Desktop PC $529.99

Gateway 817GM Intel Pentium 4 3GHz (HT) / 512MB DDR / 200GB SATA HDD / DVD±RW Dual-Layer / CD-ROM / Flash Media Reader / Intel Graphics Media Accelerator / Windows XP Home / Refurbished Desktop PC $634.97

The AMD based one is NEW and still cheaper than the refurbished Intel based one. The AMD processor rates a lower speed but only in numbers, not in actual speed. Plus like I said, can be easily tweeked past the 3GHz without much fear and an extra fan. Do some research on your own through online forums and pc magazines. The hardcore gamers and Speed freeks will side with AMD.
In the end, remember, it's your money, and what you feel safer spending it on.

If you can afford for a Mac. Go for it! Because it offers you the best speed in the world you can look for! Like PCs, it won't hang while doing multiple operations. Data retrival is easy. Safe! Base memory is vast.

You can learn the Mac operations soon after you become close to it. So, think of your purpose and get, coz Mac is very costly.

Stick with PC - they arent AS overpriced as the MACS, easier to repair/upgrade and compatible with more software.

People always say MACS are better for graphics design - but if your PC has a good spec, it will deal with these tasks relatively easily.

Of course the Pc is much better. Cost, Technical help from fellow users, etc. all are much easily got for PCs.

Memory and speed of work depend on your PC configuration. Get yourself a PC configured to be fast (if necessary get it assembled.)
