Yes, snails do have sex. Either with themselves or another snail. When snails cannot find a partner they reproduce via PARTHENOGENESIS, this is not exactly the same as asexuality. Asexuality is absence of sexuality, snails certainly possess sexuality. In laymans terms parthenogenesis = virgin birth. (Parthenos) is a greek word that = (virgin) and of course (genesis) is a greek word that = (origin or birth). Because snails are HERMAPHRODITIC ( both genetically and sexually male and female simultaneously) they can fertilize/ impregnate themselves or other snails. By reproducing via pathenogenesis they essentially, make clones of themselves. Snails more often than not reproduce via parthenogenesis, but ocassionally find partners and reproduce sexually with other snails. During the mating ritual between two snails they stab each other with daggerlike projections before mating, sometime one or both snails maybe injured or sometimes one may die. No scientist knows why snails do this, but they speculate that it maybe a sort of turn-on or a type of stimulation again, no one knows. No joke!!! The snails then find a high place to mate. Once they've found a high place they secrete a string of highly viscous mucus that they both dangle from while mating. Once the mating process is finished the two dangling snails drop to the ground and go their seperate ways. Some snails are not hermaphroditic though. They are seperately male and female. Each species has its own reproductive habits.

Snails Having Sex

2016-11-08 20:46:13 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

They do have sex. One snail climbs over another with their tentacles connected. I am not joking - I have seen it many times.

Some snails are hermaphrodites, producing both spermatozoa and ova. Others, such as Apple Snails, are either male or female. Prolific breeders, snails inseminate each other in pairs to internally fertilize their ova. Each brood may consist of up to 100 eggs.

Snails have small slits on their necks where fertilisation occurs and the eggs develop.

Garden snails bury their eggs in shallow topsoil primarily while the weather is warm and damp. After 2 to 4 weeks of favorable weather, these eggs hatch and the young emerge. Snails may lay eggs as often as once a month.

I'm going on what I remember from years ago. So correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Snails are Asexual. Assuming that is true, I'm pretty sure two snails pass by each other and transfer sperm between them, thus fertilising each others eggs. I know that's how earth worms do it, and I'm pretty sure snails are the same way.

snails actually do do it. snails are both guys and girls (i'm serious!) so they each have this tentacle thing that they inject into each other to reproduce. and they stay like that for a while. i forgot what it was called though. it was called a love something. i'm not kidding. i learned this in science class. and i've actually seen it before. it was really interesting!

Yes they do. Just watch them in the garden, pressed to one another along their whole lengths and, lucky old snails, they are hermaphroditic so they can always find a partner!

they are hermaphrodites and that means that a snail is both a female and male. they both let out sperm and they both let out eggs for the sperm to fertilize and then i think they lay their eggs and they hatch, I'm not sure about the whole birth thing but i know they rub against each other letting their eggs and sperm touch. not pleasurable like human sex but it serves their purpose of reproducing

In my garden I very often find two snails stuck together it seems to work the same as dogs as they are tied together
